TV adaptation of Jane Austen's Regency novel -- a novel that perceptively examines the social manners and laws that governed 19th-Century Britain. Set in a rural English village, "Sense and Sensibility" concentrates on the loves and heartaches of sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. The two have extremely divergent approaches to life: Elinor believes in behaving with propriety and thoughtfulness, while Marianne fully gives herself over to her emotions. But both women experience the same sense of confusion when their lovers, seemingly on the verge of proposing marriage, suddenly get called away to London -- followed by the swift departure of another of Marianne's suitors. So when the Dashwood family receives an invitation to the capital, they gladly accept. Now the sisters can discover what happened to their men. What they learn causes complications, calamities, and surprises... and teaches Elinor and Marianne some hard lessons they'll never forget. |
