Description:
This subversively satirical variation on the Robinson Crusoe tale is a cheeky critique of colonization, race relations and the class struggle. Crusoe, a shipwrecked British mariner, encounters several natives visiting from a nearby island. Defending his territory, he kills all but one, and bullies lone survivor Friday into a life of servitude and hard labor. Crusoe force-feeds his free-spirited servant the culture, language and mores of Western society. But the more fun-loving, communal living Friday learns, the less he chooses to obey. Eventually, he rebels against his colonizer and exposes the faulty logic on which this strange thing called "civilization" was founded. |
